Make Way for Women on the Speedway
Today, four women continued the race forward of promoting female excellence in multigendered sports. In 1977, Janet Guthrie became the first woman to ever compete in the Indianapolis 500. This year, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500, 5 women out of over 70 racers competed in the qualifying race and 4 moved on to compete in today’s race. Danica Patrick, leading the race for a good amount of laps, ended up placing 10th, Pippa Mann in 20th, Ana Beatriz in 21st, and Simona De Silvestro in 31st despite severe burns on her hands after crashing in the qualifying race.
