AWP 2014 Seattle Feminist Panel Guide
For your feminist appetite I have complied a savory dish of 2014 AWP Seattle feminist panels. How, you ask, do I know these are feminist panels, when few of them self-identify as feminist? Well, identify, rather, identity is going to be the key term here.
This year VIDA: Women in the Literary Arts will be your go-to site for all panels and events relating to women’s writing. For my new position as Web Assistant within VIDA I collected, with Cate Marvin, and posted over 60 panels and events dedicated to women’s and sexual identity-focused writing and communities, so definitely take advantage of that resource! And so not to duplicate work, I took on the challenge of a slightly different approach to the AWP Feminist Panels Guide this year.
Exciting (and daunting, yes–I need more sets of bodies to sit in on all these panels!) was the shear volume of panels and events driven by a feminist and self-empowerment mission. Last year, I gathered for you a list of 15 panels. In part I had to a goal to avoid a totally overwhelming list, but even with my rather loose restriction there were not as nearly as many feminist, sexual identity, women’s-focused panels to pick from. This year, you are saturated in feminist love. What I need to find out next is the ratio of feminist panels to the over-all total of panels, and if I would use AWP’s schedule search function (moderators were given the opportunity to check mark advanced search options to help users identity their panel) to count that ratio, or what. Next project, post-AWP.
This year in addition to VIDA’s event calendar, I collected 37 panels that focus on identity and identifying, an aspect of feminism I’ve been wanting to think through more carefully. These panels question ready-made conceptions of the “type of” people we are, and work toward processing how we then consume or react against that packaged identity. These panels ask us to question how we intuitively (sometimes to a stereotypical fault) categorize others thinking the way we perceive them acting is “natural” before we really think about what “natural” means, before we really think of the human being that “other” is. I’m imagining the conversations, here, will encourage thought and discussion on intersectionality, otherness, and empathy, which is solidly feminism.
