ROAR Magazine: Journal of the Literary Art by Women Open for Submissions!

ROARWIDGET1For the past few years I have been involved in the ROAR Magazine universe. First as a contributor with my poem “Like Water” in the Spring 2013 issue, then as a reader, to  Poetry Editor, to now both Poetry Editor and Managing Editor. It has been a true joy to be a part of ROAR at a crucial time of the journal’s expansion and during a cultural expansion of the mind where individuals, thought leaders, and organizations are considering (or at least thinking about) their role in advocating for and creating gender parity in publishing and reviewing.

I am excited to share details about our current open submissions period, in part because I look forward to wonderful submissions, but, in addition, this year we are taking care to explicitly announce that we welcome and encourage submissions from trans women writers. Trans women are women and sometimes the conversation around dedicated women’s spaces are hostile toward trans women. I want and ROAR wants “quality literature by women. Period.” So if you self-identify as a woman, you have a home in ROAR.

Here are some podcasts you can listen to on and around feminism with trans women speakers: 92|Y Talks Podcast Pass the Mic – Millennial Feminism: 92Y Talks Episode 26 and This Feels Terrible with Erin McGathy and Shadi Petosky.

Mission

ROAR is a print literary journal that exists to provide a space to showcase women’s fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We are committed to publishing literature by emerging and developing writers and we aim to support the equality of women in the creative arts.
ROAR accepts work that represents a wide spectrum of form, language and meaning. In other words, don’t worry if your work isn’t specific to feminist issues. If you’re a gal, we just want your point of view.
You can reach us at [email protected]

Submit Work

In our endeavor to remain an independent literary journal, ROAR made the decision to charge a small submission/reading fee of $4.00. This decision was difficult yet necessary. The editorial staff of ROAR is comprised of a handful of committed volunteers. Every cent of the submission fee is put back into producing a quality issue, as well as allowing ROAR to market our writers in any way we can.

We look forward to reading your work. We promise to honor the time you’ve invested in your craft with a thorough editorial review of your submission. Our submission guidelines are as follows:

Submission Guidelines

Please submit your work in a format that can be read by Microsoft Word. Feel free to include a cover letter, but they are not necessary. Please do include a short bio.

At this time we are not considering previously published work. Simultaneous submissions are welcome and encouraged, but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know immediately.

By submitting, you verify that you are the author of the submitted work, and that the Author grants First North American Serial Rights to ROAR Magazine. Rights revert to the author upon publication. Please credit ROAR Magazine as place of first publication. ROAR Magazine reserves the right to make minor copy editing changes to the manuscript. Any major editorial changes will require author’s approval prior to publication. Payment is one copy of the issue in which your work appears.
